With You Heart and Soul

Read 1 Samuel 14:1-14

“Do all that you have in mind, the armor-bearer said, “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul” 1 Samuel 14:7

The situation is quite desperate. The thousands of Philistines way outnumber the mere 600 fighting men of Israel (13:15, 14:2). And no one in Israel even has a weapon (besides the king and his son Jonathan) because the Philistines have made sure that there are no blacksmiths in Israel (13:19). The Israelites are essentially hiding from the Philistines because they believe there is no way to win this fight (14:8,11).

But Jonathan is apparently tired of hiding and announces to his armor-bearer that he’d like to go attack the outpost of Philistines. He know he’s outnumbered but it doesn’t seem to be a concern of his. He sounds almost cheerful about it, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised fellows.”(v 6) He’s not necessarily degrading them. Merely declaring that they do not wear the sign of the covenant with God in their very flesh. He’s reminding the armor-bearer and perhaps himself who has God on their side. “Perhaps the Lord will act on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving whether by many or by few.” (v 6)

running cliff top togetherSo the two of them scale the cliff, full of faith in the power of God and take on the Philistine army. In the first attack, it’s just Jonathan and his armor-bearer.  They fight valiantly then God steps in and sends a panic on the Philistines. Saul looks up and sees the whole army melting away.  Jonathan was right, ‘nothing can hinder the Lord from saving whether by many or by few.’ Please help me to remember, LORD that You are not hindered by odds that seem against me.  Perhaps the Lord will work on our behalf!!
