Read 1 Samuel 12
“For the sake of his great name, the LORD will not reject his people, because the LORD was pleased to make you his own…Be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.” 1 Samuel 12:22-24
Oh the wonder of God being pleased to make us his own! Just this morning I was walking and watching the sunrise and whispering these words, “I am my Beloved’s and He is mine.” Wonderful, undeserved, unfailing love.
Israel had just rejected God as their king and asked for a human king like all the other nations (1 Sam 8:7). God is not pleased with their request. He puts His own power over nature on display proving himself the rightful king (12:16-18). But though He is not pleased with their request, He is still ‘pleased to make [them] His own.’ Unconditional love.
The relationship with God is conditional though His love is not. He says to fear the LORD. To serve Him faithfully with all your heart. To consider what great things He has done. If God’s people do these things, God will continue to rescue them. But if God’s people persist in doing evil (I love that He puts the word ‘persist’ in there), we will be swept away.
O let me truly fear the LORD. Let me serve Him faithfully with all my heart . Let me remember the great things He has already done for me. He is pleased to make me His own.
