In Your Heart

Read 1 Samuel 8-9early morning lake

… in the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is in your heart . . . And to whom is all the desire of Israel turned if not to you and all your father’s family? 1 Sam 9:19-20

I wonder how Saul slept that night? Knowing that the prophet of God, the seer (one who sees) would tell him all that was in his heart that next morning. God doesn’t only know all that is in Saul’s heart, He also knows the desire of all Israel, ‘for their cry has reached me,’ God says in v 16. They are asking for a king. Saul’s name means, ‘asked for’. And though God would rather his people longed ONLY for HIM to be King, He knows their hearts and tells Samuel not to take offense on God’s behalf. It is God they have rejected in favor of an earthly king – in spite of all of the warnings.

But God still does not reject His people. God says He will send Saul to Samuel and Samuel should, ‘Anoint him leader over my people Israel; he will deliver my people from the hand of the Philistines. I have looked upon my people, for their cry has reached me.’ (v 16)

God has looked upon his people. He knew their hearts. He responded with deliverence. What grace I read about here – that God looks upon ME. He knows my heart – my imperfect heart. He hears my cry and He responds. O gracious and compassionate God! May I only long for You to be King of me!
