Finding Hope

Read 1 Samuel 21-22 and Psalm 52

“But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever.  I will praise you forever for what you have done; in your name I will hope, for your name is good.  I will praise you in the presence of your saints.” Psalm 52:9

These are the words that David prayed when Doeg told Saul that David had gone to Ahimelech the priest to inquire of God for him (intro to Ps 52). These are the words he prayed when he found out his trip to the priest caused the deaths of that whole family (save one) along with the whole of the town of Nob (1 Sam 22:18-22). These are the words he prayed as he took responsibility for those deaths and gathered one more under his care – Ahitub (son of Ahimelech).

Here David is in the forest of Hereth.  He’s tucked his parents away in Moab with his great grandma’s side of the family (22:3). He’s gathered around him the distressed, the debtors, and the discontented and has become the leader of this band of around 400 (22:2). He hears how Saul is questioning and killing others in an attempt to find and kill him.  I’m amazed that he still has hope!  I get discouraged just leading a band of 4 children and I have a husband who spearheads the whole thing.  But if my kids are discontented or distressed or in need of money, I can easily become discouraged along with them especially if there are any hard circumstances that come along at the same time.

Talk about hard circumstances – no home, guilt over causing the death of many, running for his life, surrounded by the 3 D’s!   But he prays, “I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God.”  Perhaps he is remembering how he found consecrated bread and the sword of Goliath when he went to Ahimelech in the house of God.  He says, “I will trust in your unfailling love forever and ever”. He knows deep down that nothing is going to shake God’s love for him and that is giving him hope. No matter how bad his king is.  No matter how bad his companions are.  No matter how bad the circumstances around him are. He finds hope in God’s name because God’s name is GOOD.

Today I’m looking for hope.  I’m trying to remember that I can flourish in God’s presence.  O LORD, help me to trust in your unfailing love. I want to praise You!
