The LORD is With Him

Read 1 Samuel 16 and 17

“One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp.  He is a brave man and a warrior.  He speaks well and is a fine-looking man.  And the LORD is with him.” 1 Samuel 16:18

David’s name means ‘beloved’.  I’ve always loved that we have that in common.  He was beloved by so many.  From the day Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David, the Spirit of the LORD came upon him with power.  But even before being anointed, I believe David had been learning to walk with God.

I tried to find some psalms that I could know for sure were written during this time period so I could see David’s journey with God prior to being anointed, but I couldn’t.  What I do know, though, was that God looked at David’s heart and chose him as king (16:7).  Not just any king – a favored king; one with whose name Jesus’ name will be connected for always.  Jesus, called the Son of David (Matt 9:27). Jesus, from the line of David (Luke 1:69, 2:4).  Jesus, born in the town of David (Luke 2:4).

When a servant recommended David as a muscian for King Saul, he gave quite a description: musician, brave, warrior, well spoken, and good looking.  The last part, though, is what caught my eye.  The servant could see that the LORD was with David.

Never was this more obvious than when David fought Goliath.  David knew that God was with him.  He told King Saul that the LORD who delivered him in the past would deliver him again (17:37).  Then he took off Saul’s ill-fitting armor, picked up a sling and a stone and told Goliath that all those gathered would know that it was not a sword or spear that saved Israel but the LORD himself (17:47).

When people look at me can they tell the LORD is with me?  Do I live in a way that shows I’m confident in the power and the love of God?
